Why Go With Tymbrel SSL?

As we've mentioned in a previous post, installing an SSL certificate on your website will improve your credibility online, enhance your visitors' privacy, and provide help you rank higher on Google, too. But you may still be wondering: what are the SSL options, and how can we help you manage it?

Remind me. What, exactly, is SSL?

Secure Socket Layer (SSL) is a technology that encrypts the data transmitted between your website and the browser used by your visitors (i.e., the 'little green lock' next to your website address).

The 3 Types of SSL

There are 3 types of SSL verification. But, unless your organization has special requirements, our Let's Encrypt SSL service will do everything you need, and will be free to renew going forward.

That said, the main differences between SSL certificates come down to the process by which your SSL certificate has been verified by independent 3rd parties.

The levels of verification are:

DV SSL LEVEL | Eg CMSIntelligence Inc.None; No SSL

This is when your site does not have SSL installed.

You'll see an exclamation point in the address bar and when you click on it, you'll see the red "Your connection to this site is not secure".

Benefits

Green "Secure" Padlock
Enhanced Visitor Privacy
SEO 'Points' With Google
Easy to Setup / Free Renewals

DV SSL LEVEL | Eg CMSIntelligence Inc.DV or Domain Validated Certificates
(Offered via Tymbrel SSL)

This level proves that your website was verified as trusted at the domain name level. So, because you own the domain name for your website, and you've pointed the domain name to our system (Tymbrel), our system is able to prove that relationship and issue an SSL certificate through Let's Encrypt.

OV SSL LEVEL | eg CIBC OV or Organization Validated Certificates

Green "Secure" Padlock

Organization Name Verified on Your Certificate

EV SSL LEVEL | eg. The Washington PostEV or Extended Validation Certificates

Like OV, these certificates provide the highest level of trust. To obtain this level of certificate, the process is even more detailed and rigorous than OV; however the result is a your Organization's Name appearing in the Green Padlock area of the address bar.

FAQS

How do I know if I need SSL?

You should get some form of SSL for any website. It improves your credibility online, enhances your website visitors' privacy and Google rewards your efforts with additional SEO 'points' towards your overall Google ranking.

If you intend to sell or collect money via your website, request users fill in personal information of any time, or to create a private "members-only" login, you MUST get SSL. You can really no longer get away without it.

I have SSL, can I just use that?

Assuming it is transferrable, absolutely! That said, some certificates are not, you'll need to confirm with your current provider.

That said, our techs will need to install it on your behalf. This takes time for custom certificates, so we charge a nominal fee. In addition, when your certificate comes up for renewal, we may need to again update the certificate at that time with the new one provided by your SSL Provider which would be subject to the same fee.

NOTE: Unless your certificate is OV or EV (see the definitions further down this article), it's typically more efficient and cost-effective to just enable our DV SSL on your site with Tymbrel. We charge a one-time fee to install it, but then you have it for as long as your site is on the Tymbrel platform.

How do I make my business name to appear in the green bar like the Washington Post.

For websites where trust and security is paramount, there are EV certificates that can be purchased and registered through 3rd party providers. The process is a bit complex and requires a number of hoops in verifying your business but the outcome is something more robust like you see on the Washington Post's website (see screenshot). We can help you with that, just give us a shout.

My business requires very specific SSL certifications

Some require SSL certificates almost like insurance policies. There Sounds like you know what you need! We're happy to help. Let's get on a call and we'll work with you to install the certificate manually.
