November 19, 2016 marked the 3rd annual DesignSmart Challenge at Niagara College.
This unique competition challenges students attending the New Media Web Design course to battle it out for a cash prize (and bragging rights) by building a website in just 4 hours.
About the DesignSmart Challenge
The DesignSmart Challenge is a way for CMSIntelligence to help mould the next generation of website designers coming out of Niagara.
Since 2014, DesignSmart has been giving students the opportunity to apply the skills they've learned while at college in a competition that mimics real-world scenarios. This includes working in a team, sticking to a deadline, interpreting a client brief, and delivering a final presentation.
The students also get exposure to new technology that they may one day use in the field. That tech is called Tymbrel. It's a Smarter Website Management Platform that web design agencies and marketers leverage to build websites faster. Visit Tymbrel.com to learn more.
Each year, the DesignSmart Challenge takes place during the Niagara College fall open house. It's a great way for future Niagara College students to interact with both current attendees and the CMSIntelligence team.
All challengers received a $10 Tim Hortons gift card and DesignSmart t-shirt for participating in the event.
2016 was a Huge Success
This year, we saw some of the best designs since the inception of the challenge. In fact, the overall quality and expertise seems to increase each year. Kudos to Niagara College!
There were five teams (with 2-3 people each) participating, and the panel of judges consisted of past winner Attila Hajzer of HWD Design, Mark Hardwick and Joe Lapinski (professors at Niagara College), as well as Larry Chartier, Creative Director at CMSIntelligence.
The Winning Team
It was a unanimous decision.
While all teams did an excellent job, one group stood out as a clear winner. Their design, level of completeness, and integration of the Tymbrel platform scored them above the competition to take home the cash prize.
The winners of the 2016 DesignSmart Challenge, and recipients of the $250 grand prize, were Joshua Hanson, Amir Bukhari, and Ben Starr.
Congratulations guys, you did an awesome job!
