There has certainly been a trend over the past few years to a more minimalist sensibility when it comes to website design.
A less cluttered, more streamlined home page can have its advantages, as long as it serves to pique the interest of the visitor to find out more. Having said that, too bare and there may be a failure to engage.
However, we do not believe that this is all that the trend to Simplicity is about. It isn't just about designing home and interior web pages, it's also about the message.
... and your message.
Scientists will tell you that at the heart of very complex and sophisticated systems, there is always a very simple explanation. It's the same with business.
The challenge for designers is to hone in on that simplicity, the innate essence of their clients business, and to express that essence in its purest form – both in pictures and in words.
Really, if you think about it, the desired result you want from a website is, in itself, quite simple. You want the visitor to look, to read, and within a very short period of time become engaged enough to contact you in some way.
How do you do this?
Keep the KISS Principle at the heart of your design and messaging.
The KISS Principle was a design principle first noted by the US navy in 1960. The underlying philosophy was that most 'systems work best if they are kept simple, rather than made complex; therefore, simplicity should be the key goal in design and unnecessary complexity should be avoided.'
In website design, this holds true if you want to make your website really useful to lots of people.
If you want to make something that may be very 'cool', but in reality is only useful to a handful of designers, then keep the complexity. (We believe, however, that designing your website so that only a couple of people "get it" seems a little counter-intuitive.)
Sure... it takes some experience and intellect to distill what may appear to be a your very complex business offering, into its most basic form for display online, but that's what we're here for. We help you with your total message.
