What is a Gravatar? (Or... how to show your photo when you submit a blog comment.)

Posted in General / Education

If you read blogs often you probably have noticed that most of them have a feature that allows visitors to share a comment. Next to these comments are little thumbnails of the person adding the post - but how do they do it?

Allow me to introduce you to the Gravatar (or 'Globally Recognized Avatar').

Simply put, a Gravatar is an image that gets attached to your email address. Once you set up a Gravatar, your photo will automatically be attached to any blog you post using your email address.

How much does it cost?

It’s FREE! Just head over to and create an account. Once you’ve signed in, follow the instructions and set up your new photo. Just a heads up, it may take up to 24 hours before your new photo starts appearing online.

What does it look like?

Check out my comment about the Niagara Technology Summit to see my Gravatar... or, try it for yourself. Create an account and post a comment here!
